GB2LSM Long Shop Museum 2011

John, Martin, Tony and David set up and operated the station at GB2LSM, completing 62 QSO's across 22 DXCC's, using a mix of CW and SSB. Best Dx for them was also the USA (K1ZR in New Hampshire). Bands used were 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m.

GB0SHF Suffolk Herring Festival 2011

Windy, but sunny and warm - a fun day out amongst local folks with some drama, music, games and other lunacy focussed on the humble herring! GB0SHF operated purely on CW, and attracted a good degree of interest amongst the crowds, including Libby Purves (of The Times and Radio 4 fame) and a number of visiting amateurs, including G0EBQ, who worked a station in Alabama for us (one of two worked during the day). Just 14 QSO's on 20 and 40m were made but the main purpose of the day was talking to people - and plenty of that was done! It was also a first outing for the new G5RV antenna that will replace the nested dipoles at Leiston School in the near future. All the QSO's were on 20m or 40m.

Bentwaters Cold War Museum 2011

Under the call GB2CWM this is the second time that we have supported the Museum team in their bi-annual open day. The weather this year was decidedly 'blustery', but the club turn out was very good, and we had some interesting conversations with visitors during the day.

'Ad-hoc' Foxhunt - 2 Aug 2011

After the 'official' LARC foxhunt in June, several members requested another chance - so on Tues 2 Aug, Keith duly hid himself in Rendlesham Forest and a number of us set out on foot to find him. It took about 40 minutes or so for the first stations to find him, but it was more about understanding the behaviour of antennas and equipment for close in hunting - no one was using yagi arrays, but we all used either loops or monopole antennas. It was a good opportunity to build confidence in the readings the rig was giving you...

The Long Shop Museum

Leiston's proud industrial history is encapsulated in the magnificent little museum housed in the buildings which once formed part of the Richard Garrett works. Every October the museum holds a 'Final Fling' day, when the exhibits are 'steamed up' and other fun activities are staged as well - the last day the museum is open before the winter.

LARC has run the GB2LSM demonstration station at this event for a number of years - the Garrett site was used during the war years as an extension of the facilities for Pye of Cambridge, assembling radio equipment, so there is a radio manufacturing heritage here.

Foxhunts

Yes - there is still foxhunting! And it's not illegal either - every year one of our number hides himself with a radio transmitter and other members set out with receivers and portable antennas to try and find him. In the last couple of years we have 'gone green' and our foxhunts are now on foot.

Bentwaters Cold War Museum 2009

Part of the heritage of Suffolk is it's significant role payed in military defence of the British Isles. In addition to the many first and second WW sites around the county, BCWM is a lasting reminder of the intensity of activity during the 'Cold War' years. Every couple of years, the BCWM group hold an open day, at which we enjoy running a demonstration station.
